The latest ‘national week’ is upon us…

This week is National Adoption Week – something you may have heard about following today’s announcement of David Cameron’s plans to reform the adoption process.  At Context, we’ve been actively speaking to the media about this annual event for several weeks, on behalf of our client the charity After Adoption, but what benefits can these campaigning weeks, or even days, bring for a business or cause?

An increased profile, awareness for the work you are doing and the people you are helping, a boost for fundraising, strong CSR?  Yes, yes, yes, and yes - but this is only possible if your campaign is well planned and co-ordinated, get it wrong and you can quickly end up with a depleted budget with no press coverage to show for it, and at worst damage to your reputation.

If you’re going to get involved – or if you have the budgets to develop your own ‘day’ or ‘week’ – make sure you look at all of the individual elements.  Don’t stop at a case study in the national press, instead ensure you utilise your SEO activity, digital PR, marketing communications, and of course the regional newspapers that most of us read on a daily or weekly basis.  Plan your activity carefully, and if you’re getting involved in a bigger campaign with other companies or charities, make sure you co-ordinate not just with them but also with everyone across your own business to get the most out of it.

These days there is everything from National Chip Week to Child Poverty Day and even an ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’, so consider carefully what you do and how you do it to protect your brand and successfully build your profile.
